Co-design Maker Competence Framework & Teacher Training Courses in Maker Education

Work Package 2

Lead: Pädagogische Hochschule Wien (PHW)
Duration: Month 1 – Month 33

This work package aims to integrate maker education into teacher education through the development of a comprehensive Maker Competence Framework and corresponding training courses. The objectives are to:

  • Foster the link between teacher education and maker pedagogy;

  • Identify and define key competencies that support creativity, innovation, and problem-solving;

  • Help teachers feel confident with maker technologies and support them in facilitating learner-led maker projects.

Key tasks include:

T2.1 Co-design the Maker Competency Framework:
Developed in collaboration with stakeholders and informed by existing EU frameworks (e.g., DigComp, EntreComp), this task will define the key skills—both technical (e.g. electronics, programming, digital fabrication) and transversal (e.g. teamwork, critical thinking, entrepreneurship)—needed in maker education. The framework will align with broader educational goals and support inclusive and innovative teaching practices.

T2.2 Co-design the “Maker Education” Training Course:
Develop learning modules for teachers based on constructivist and maker culture principles. Topics include:

  • Module 1: electronics & circuitry, programming (e.g. Micro:bit, Arduino)
  • Module 2: educational robotics
  • Module 3: digital fabrication

Modules will be tested in teacher courses and schools, refined based on feedback, and focus on project-based, team-driven, and problem-solving learning methods.

T2.3 Open Educational Resources (OERs):
Create and curate a collection of open resources that support teachers in designing and implementing maker projects. These will include video tutorials, toolkits, lesson plans, and self-help guides tailored to the needs of maker-based learning environments.
